FOUNDER SOLI CORBELLE ON COLLECTING BANKSYs

Although his identity remains a mystery, Banksy’s provocative stencils are among the most iconic and controversial images in Street Art. He started “bombing” in the early 1990s around Southwest England with his work. Since then, his art has made its way around cities around the World, from San Juan to Tokyo.

Banksy has been selling his works for sale for over 20 years. His earliest pieces sold at auction date back to 1998, and his commercial prints to 2002. By the late 2000s, the art world caught on to Banksy’s appeal, at which point, many of his works were removed from their original public settings and sold privately. For instance, “Kissing Coppers", originally on a wall of a Brighton pub, sold for $575,000 in Miami in 2014. More recently, “Seasons Greetings”, originally on a garage in Port Talbot in Wales, sold for a six-figure sum. And earlier this year, Banksy broke auction records with the iconic “Girl With Balloon”, which went on to shred to pieces and sold for $1.9 million USD.

Banksy’s most iconic edition images, which are often directly inspired by his street art. “Girl With Balloon” depicts a girl extending her hand towards a red heart-shaped balloon. The work was originally a series of stencil murals first sprayed in London in 2002. While the image with the red balloon has become synonymous with Banksy, there are blue, pink, gold and purple variations on the market.

Banksy’s prints come in both signed and unsigned editions with a certificate from Pest Control, Banksy’s “handling service”. Banksy’s unsigned prints are created in higher edition numbers and are more affordable than their signed counterparts. Unsigned and signed works are equally legitimate—the Pest Control Certificate is proof of authenticity. Banksy established Pest Control in 2008 to authenticate his works and prevent fakes from infiltrating the market. All Banksy artworks sold after 2009 are sold with a Pest Control certificate. The service can also retroactively issue certificates for works that predate 2008.

Banksy has earned his place in art history as a master of street art. The appeal of his work is timeless. As a result, the market for his work is high, but steady. Banksy’s new editions are few and far between—his latest release was in 2010—causing the value of his prints to continue to rise.
